Coconut Oil Isn't Basic, It's Actually Backed by Science
At some point, coconut oil started feeling a little unglamorous. Everyone's talking about argan this and camellia that, and the humble bottle sitting in your grandmother's kitchen cabinet got quietly pushed to the back of the shelf.
That's a shame, honestly, because coconut oil does something structurally that most trending oils don't.
Why Coconut Oil Works Differently
Most oils sit on the surface of your hair. They coat the strand, add shine, and reduce friction, which is useful, but it's a surface-level effect.
- Coconut oil's molecular structure allows it to actually penetrate the hair shaft, not just coat it
- This penetration helps prevent protein loss from inside the strand, addressing damage at its source rather than masking it
- Its high lauric acid content gives it an affinity for hair protein that most other oils don't have
- This is why it works so well as a pre-wash treatment, applied before shampooing rather than after
That last point matters more than people realise. Using coconut oil after washing gives you shine. Using it before washing actually protects the hair shaft during the wash itself, which is when most damage happens.
The Ayurvedic Perspective: A Cooling, Grounding Oil
In Ayurveda, coconut oil has always been valued as a cooling oil, particularly suited to pacifying aggravated Pitta on the scalp. This is part of why it's traditionally recommended in warmer climates and seasons, it calms inflammation and heat at the root rather than adding to it.
It's also considered grounding for Vata, making it one of the rare oils that suits a wide range of scalp conditions rather than being narrowly targeted. That versatility is likely part of why it never really went out of use, even as trends came and went around it.
How to Actually Use It Right
A lot of people use coconut oil incorrectly, which is part of why it sometimes gets a bad reputation for making hair feel greasy or weighed down.
- Apply it as a pre-wash treatment, thirty minutes to overnight before shampooing. This is when its penetration benefits actually kick in.
- Use it sparingly on the lengths if your hair is fine. A little goes further than most people expect, and too much just weighs hair down without added benefit.
- Warm it slightly before applying. Warm oil penetrates more effectively than cold oil straight from the jar.
Our Hair Care range uses cold-pressed coconut oil as a base for exactly this reason, its ability to work from inside the hair shaft rather than just sitting on the surface.
Coconut oil was never actually "basic." It's just been around long enough that people forgot to ask why it works. Turns out, the science was there all along.
