The Ubtan Effect: Why Grandma's Skincare Routine Still Works

The Ubtan Effect: Why Grandma's Skincare Routine Still Works
Every Indian household seems to have some version of this memory. A grandmother or aunt mixing besan, turmeric, and milk into a paste before a wedding or festival, insisting it would make your skin glow better than anything from a store. As a kid you probably rolled your eyes at it. As an adult scrolling through skincare shelves full of serums with names you can't pronounce, it starts to make a lot more sense.
Ubtan isn't a trend that showed up on Instagram. It's been around for centuries, and there's real reasoning behind why it works.
What's Actually in a Traditional Ubtan
- Besan (gram flour). A gentle natural exfoliant that removes dead skin without the harshness of physical scrubs
- Turmeric. Anti-inflammatory and known for calming redness and evening out skin tone
- Milk or yogurt. Contains lactic acid, a mild natural exfoliant, plus hydration
- Sandalwood or rose water, depending on the region. Cooling, soothing, and good for calming irritated skin
Strip away the branding, and a lot of modern "glow serums" are really just isolated, expensive versions of ingredients that were already sitting in this one simple paste.
The Ayurvedic Perspective: Balancing All Three Doshas at Once
What makes ubtan genuinely clever is that it addresses Vata, Pitta, and Kapha together rather than targeting just one. Besan gently clears excess Kapha (oiliness and buildup). Turmeric calms Pitta (inflammation and redness). Milk or yogurt hydrates and softens, addressing Vata's dryness. Very few single skincare products manage to hit all three at once, which is part of why this simple paste has stuck around for so long despite endless newer alternatives showing up.
How to Actually Use It
- Mix fresh, don't stockpile. Ubtan loses potency once mixed with liquid, so prepare small batches and use them within a day or two.
- Apply while slightly damp, not dripping wet. This helps it stick and work into the skin rather than just sliding off.
- Massage gently in circular motions before rinsing. This is where the mild exfoliation actually happens, so don't rush this step.
If mixing your own paste feels like too much effort on a regular weekday, that's completely fair. Our Skin Care range includes ubtan-inspired formulations that carry the same core ingredients in a ready-to-use format, so you get the tradition without standing in the kitchen every weekend.
Old Doesn't Mean Outdated
There's a tendency to assume newer skincare automatically means better skincare. Ubtan is a good reminder that this isn't always true. Sometimes the most effective formula is the one that's been quietly working for generations, long before anyone needed a ten-step routine or a five-syllable ingredient name to feel like they were doing something right.
Maybe your grandmother was onto something after all.
