The Real Reason Your Hair Oil Isn't Working

The Real Reason Your Hair Oil Isn't Working
You bought the oil everyone recommended. You've been using it for weeks. And yet, your scalp still feels dry, your hair still sheds, and nothing about your routine seems to be moving the needle. At this point, it's tempting to write off oiling altogether as overhyped.
Before you do that, though, it's worth asking a different question. Not "is this oil good enough," but "am I actually applying it right?"
The Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes
- Pouring oil straight onto dry hair strands instead of the scalp itself
- Rubbing it in fast and hard for thirty seconds, then rushing off
- Washing it out within the hour, before it's had time to actually absorb
- Using cold oil straight from the bottle every single time
None of these are dramatic errors. They're small habits that quietly cancel out the benefit of a genuinely good product.
Why Technique Matters More Than People Think
Hair oil doesn't do much sitting on the surface of your strands. Its real job is reaching the scalp, where it can nourish the follicle and improve circulation to the root. If you're only coating the ends, you're essentially using a scalp treatment as a hair conditioner, which is a bit like using a raincoat as a blanket. It's the wrong job for the product.
The Ayurvedic Perspective: Abhyanga Isn't Just Oiling, It's Ritual
In Ayurveda, oil application on the scalp is called Abhyanga, and it was never meant to be a rushed five-minute task. Traditionally, it involves warm oil, slow circular massage strokes, and enough time left afterward for the oil to actually penetrate before washing. The warmth opens the scalp's pores slightly and improves blood flow, while the massage itself is believed to pacify Vata dosha, the same dosha linked to dryness and hair fall.
Skip the warmth and the time, and you're left with oil that mostly just sits there.
How to Actually Apply Hair Oil
- Warm it slightly first. A few seconds in warm water is enough. You want it comfortably warm, not hot.
- Apply directly to the scalp, section by section. Use your fingertips, not your palms, and work in small circular motions.
- Massage for at least five minutes. This is the part everyone skips. It's also the part doing most of the work.
- Leave it in for two to three hours, or overnight. Rinsing it out too soon undoes most of the benefit.
If you've been doing all of this and still seeing no change after a month or two, it might genuinely be time to reconsider the oil itself. Our Hair Care range is formulated to absorb well with proper Abhyanga technique, so the two work together instead of one compensating for the other.
Give the Right Technique a Fair Trial
Most people give up on oiling after two weeks of rushed, half-hearted application and call the product ineffective. Hair growth cycles don't move that fast. Give proper technique a real six to eight week trial before deciding anything isn't working.
Sometimes the fix isn't a new bottle. It's just slowing down with the one you already have.
